This is a book about sustainable medicine. In the face of steadily rising costs for both medical treatment and health insurance, it is a tragedy that so few know how to heal themselves any more. We live in a world where millions of people are suffering from multiple forms of degenerative disease. Our food wisdom has been lost, our food system no longer carries the nutrition needed to repair and rebuild our bodies daily, and no one seems to know about or have time to prepare real food. Before the Industrial Revolution, if people avoided infections and accidents, they often lived long, healthy lives and died peacefully in their sleep. In early 1987, Penny Kelly and her husband, Jim, purchased fifty-seven acres of land, complete with a 100-year-old house, a dilapidated barn, and two small vineyards. At the time they knew nothing about raising grapes.
Since then, they have remodeled the house into a rental property, and turned the barn into their home, office, and small learning center. They are in the process of restoring the soil, vineyards, and some of the natural habitat that had been lost. In addition to her BA, Penny has earned a degree in naturopathic medicine, and is working toward a PhD in nutrition.
Great book!. Despite the date of original publication and revised edition, the information presented is still relevant to the pursuit of good health. Perhaps, as another reviewer has already noted, the book would be useful for youthful students learning the techniques of research at elementary or junior high school level. When I first came across this book, I looked at it with derision. In August 1966 I moved to Dallas, Texas to begin my first professional employment position after graduating from Baylor Law School. Try this chapter opening, a personal remembrance of a long-gone Yamaha TD1: "Innocent events sometimes punch through time into the past, leaving us fascinated, surrounding us with the vapors of forgotten feelings." Poetry, matching the man's analytical mind.
