While she did stand up for herself once (it was my favorite part of the book when she finally told off MJ for keeping things from her!) during the course of the story, the rest of the time she just let it all happen. That said, there are two main weaknesses. If you are interested in the history of the book, pick this up. Wow! What a great read. With encouragement from a family member, I used to her book, entering our local county fair last year for the very first time in my life. Reading this story I felt like that young boy asking " Is this a dream" It's hard for me, an infant of the 70's, a child of the 80's, a teen of the 90's, to believe that these atrocities ever occurred. Edith Wharton and Henry James should be taking a few uneasy turns in their graves for their damning silence on BELCHAMBER. Nice comments and helpful tips.
