In fact, whilst reading the novel, I was continually reminded of the character of Ralph Touchett in A Portrait of a Lady. So go read it. Just read the book well and you will do fine on any exam.

Joe Hill is rife with cuttable sections -- after the second attack on Wallace Stegner, the reader's eyes glaze over -- but the prose style and intellectual speculation are loose enough to encourage judicious skimming. If you've read neither, however, and you enjoy some cleverly written alternate history, then I suggest you check out Walton's novels and see what it's all about.
